Tooth extraction, including surgical

Removing a tooth when restoring it isn't possible or appropriate, after the alternatives are explained.

Keeping the tooth is usually the first goal, but extraction can be the right option in some cases — for example extensive damage or infection that can't be treated another way.

Some cases need a surgical extraction — for example an impacted wisdom tooth, a tooth broken below the gum line, or root remnants — and this is explained before starting.

Before any extraction the doctor discusses the reason, the alternatives and, where relevant, options for replacing the tooth later. Some cases, such as impacted wisdom teeth, may need further assessment or referral.

What to expect

  • A review of your health history and medicines, especially blood thinners.
  • Local anaesthetic before the procedure.
  • Written aftercare instructions — follow them closely.
  • Contact the clinic if bleeding continues, pain increases, or swelling or fever appears.

General information only. The right treatment for you is decided after an examination, and results vary from person to person.
