Tooth-coloured fillings

Restoring a tooth after decay is removed, using tooth-coloured materials when suitable.

Illustrative image.

When decay creates a cavity, the affected part is removed and replaced with a restorative material that gives the tooth back its shape and function. Tooth-coloured materials are commonly used; the choice depends on the tooth's position and the size of the restoration.

Not every discolouration is decay, and some very early lesions can be managed with care and fluoride rather than a filling — this is decided after an examination.

What to expect

  • Local anaesthetic when needed.
  • Removal of decay, then placing and shaping the filling and checking your bite.
  • Mild sensitivity for a few days is possible; tell the clinic if it persists or gets worse.

General information only. The right treatment for you is decided after an examination, and results vary from person to person.
