Root canal treatment

Treating infection inside a tooth, aiming to keep the tooth when its condition allows.

Illustrative image.

The tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) can become inflamed or infected because of deep decay, a fracture or a crack. Root canal treatment may then be suggested to remove the affected tissue, clean and fill the canals, and keep the tooth if it can be restored.

Questions to ask first

  • Why is this treatment recommended for my tooth?
  • Can the tooth be restored afterwards — will it need a crown?
  • What are the alternatives, and does my case need a specialist?

What to expect

  • Local anaesthetic, then cleaning, shaping and filling the canals.
  • Treatment may take more than one visit.
  • Some discomfort afterwards is possible; the doctor explains what to expect and when to contact the clinic.
  • Don't skip the final restoration and follow-up.

General information only. The right treatment for you is decided after an examination, and results vary from person to person.
